Our Homeschool Curriculum

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh
I have received many messages as to what curriculum we use or follow in our homeschool. So I have decided to write a post about it, hopefully it's beneficial.

For our children, we have decided to Insha Allah, have them write the NIOS 10th and 12th board exams, in a few years time. So we have chosen to use the Indian Curriculum and  CBSE textbooks as the base and to which we add in a lot of other information by reading different books and  encyclopedias and by going through  extra resources from various websites and do our own research and learn.

Anyway, Let me dive into our curriculum, one subject at a time.

MATH

For math we use graded CBSE textbooks,  you can get these books easily on amazon or in any bookstore where you can pick up school books Insha Allah.
Oxford Advantage Mathematics and then to reinforce our lessons , workbooks from Singapore Asia Publishers (SAP books) Math Mammoth Alhamdulillah. We use Khan Academy also whenever kids feel they need something different.
For little kids, a large variety of workbooks from Gold Star and School Skills and other online and hands on resources.` They use www.starfall.com and www.cookie.com for learning while playing games online.

Other Books for Math which my kids enjoy
  • Math Start
  • Simply Math
  • Murderous Math
Lately I have my eyes on Sir Cumference books. Insha Allah.

SCIENCE

For science also we use CBSE and NIOS textbooks
Oxford New Science in Everyday Life  textbooks which can be found  on amazon or any local bookshop and the NIOS textbooks from the NIOS website chapter wise and SAP science books.
We have then, a couple of different books on science experiments and activities and we incorporate these alongside with our lessons.

Other books for science learning
  • Lets learn and find out Books
  • The Magic School bus Books
  • The Cat in the Hat Learning Library Series
  • 100 things you should know about  (various topics are there in this series too).....
ENGLISH

We do Reading Comprehension and Writing, from SAP and Grammar fromOxford Grammar Tree. Some workbooks from Scholastic, Flash Skills, for vocabulary and spellings
For little kids  Phonics , Jolly Phonics and Starfall has helped and for phonic Readers,  books from the Usborne Phonic Readers.

For beginner reading,  Key Words with Peter and Jane and Step into Reading level books
and for writing alphabets sight words grammar etc,  School Skills by Disney and Gold Star books Kids enjoy  using these workbooks and  enjoy using stickers in them.

Almost all of our kids have used Starfall and it has helped them a lot Alhamdulillah. We also do a lot of hands on Montessori activities with learning the languages.

ARABIC

Gateway to Arabic,
Madinah Arabic Readers
Arabic for beginners from Goodword are our usual and worksheets to practice writing Arabic.
We recently started Spoken Arabic in our homeschool ,tSpoken Arabic made easy book By Amanullah Vadakkangara  is easy for learning basic phrases.

READING
There is a whole bunch of books my kids love to read, classics are an all time favorite.

HISTORY &GEOGRAPHY
As of now , we are still familiarizing ourselves with what these subjects are all a bout. For now, we are simply taking a very informal approach to these subjects, reading books and trying to learn deeper about the topics  we choose .. We have recently started with Ancient Chinese Civilizations in History and Learning about the Country  in Geography and doing some fun reading and lessons activities.

LANGUAGES
Our kids have taken an interest in learning different languages other than English, Alhamdulillah. Until recently, We would put more emphasis on reading the language until one  dear friend suggested we encourage them to learn Spoken rather than the spellings in the beginning. We are working on  Hindi and Urdu and as mentioned above Arabic  for now Alhamdulillah.

Apart from the books, videos and loads of free apps are also used Alhamdulillah.

These are the books we use, Write down in the comments which curriculum you follow or any good book or links  you could suggest for any subjects for us Insha Allah and also if you would be interested to know about our Islamic Studies subject curriculum Insha Allah.

Jazakallahu Khairan

If you read this please remember me and my family in your Prayers 😊

  1. Assalamualaikum. Your post has been an interesting read. We have started reading most of the science resources you've mentioned and they are excellent resources. I will check out the Arabic recommendations too. Could you recommend good Urdu literature for young children, or any good resources you know of for reading? I'd really appreciate it.
