Fractions Basics

  

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh
Learning fractions can be pretty frustrating for children if they cannot understand the concept. When we started this lesson we made sure we had quite a few hands on learning materials at hand Alhamdulillah.

We used different ways to teach them the basics and reinforce the concept. I will list down a few methods we used below Insha Allah. We used some manipulatives we found online and from friends  who were moving, we played games and practiced by the cutting pizzas, pies and cakes too Alhamdulillah.

This we used to explain the very basics of fractions . How to make a whole with different portions or parts.. How many quarters make a whole sort of questions. 

We had children use back part of the foam cuisenaire strips to form fraction walls to learn equivalent fractions .Ahamdulillah

These foam fraction circles we  used to have children practice their fraction knowledge. We had the children use the counting chips and fraction tiles to mark the circles accordingly. Alhamdulillah

We had the children form the fractions with the help of unifix cubes, according to the fraction tiles. Alhamdulillah









Using these tools made learning fractions much more fun and interesting for kids. its not easy for children to simply accept abstract concept in their minds always. Its always beneficial to include learning materials and tools when introducing new concepts, Children when they understand clearly the basics they will be ready to learn more.. Some children will understand at once and some may take some extra time, but with a little encouragement and practice  they will eventually get there Insha Allah.

We also prepared a fractions Lapbook  with our DS1 ... but will put that up in another post Insha Allah.
